Unpacking Exit Planning: A Tampa Business Broker’s Perspective

As a Tampa-based business broker with Transworld Business Advisors and a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA®), Certified Business Intermediary (CBI), Certified Mergers & Acquisitions Professional (CMAP), and Board Certified Intermediary (BCI), I’ve worked with countless business owners who find exit planning intimidating. But it doesn’t have to be. When you break it down to the basics—who, what, when, where, why, and how—the fog lifts, and exit planning becomes a clear, actionable process. In this post, I’ll unpack what exit planning really means and why it’s a game-changer for Tampa Bay business owners.

What is Exit Planning?

Exit planning is a strategic roadmap I use to boost a business’s value and prepare it for a smooth transition—whether that’s a sale, a handoff to the next generation, or another exit path. It’s not just about slapping a price tag on the business at the finish line or working off a static report. It’s a dynamic, ongoing process that builds value every day.

Christopher Snider, CEO of the Exit Planning Institute® (EPI), captures it perfectly in Walking to Destiny: “Exit planning is dynamic and present tense. Integrating exit planning principles into the way you run your business today will improve your business performance in real-time. It’s what you do every day in your business and personal life that determines a successful outcome.”

In my practice, I align the Three Legs of the Stool™—business, personal, and financial goals—to get owners ready for their next chapter. My approach, rooted in my CEPA training, targets three outcomes:

  1. Maximizing the business’s value,
  2. Ensuring financial and personal preparedness,
  3. Setting up the owner for a fulfilling “third act.”

To put it simply, as Snider writes: “Exit planning combines the plan, concept, effort, and process into a clear, simple strategy to build a business that is transferable through strong Human, Structural, Customer, and Social Capital.” That’s the foundation I build on for every Tampa client.

Who Benefits?

The business owner is at the heart of exit planning—everything revolves around them. They’re the ones who first realize it’s time to plan their exit, and that’s when they turn to me and their advisory team. This team often includes financial advisors, lawyers, and family members, but as a CEPA, I’m the “quarterback” who ties it all together.

With my CBI, CMAP, and BCI credentials, I bring a unique blend of expertise to the table. I conduct independent assessments of the business’s value—known as the Triggering Event—covering personal, financial, and operational factors. From there, I oversee de-risking and growth initiatives, ensuring the owner’s vision stays front and center. My goal? To align those Three Legs of the Stool so the owner exits on their terms.

For advisors reading this, becoming a CEPA is a no-brainer. It’s not just about adding a credential—it’s about standing out in a crowded field and showing Tampa business owners you’ve got the skills to guide them through one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

When & Where to Exit Plan?

Don’t let the word “exit” fool you—exit planning isn’t something you start when you’re ready to walk away. It’s about creating value today. Through the Value Acceleration Methodology™, I help owners see that the timing of their exit doesn’t dictate when planning begins. Whether they want to grow now or sell later, the value we build together makes it all possible.

It starts when the owner commits to investing in their Four Intangible Capitals: Human, Structural, Customer, and Social. These are the pillars of value creation, and how they stack up tells me exactly where we need to focus.

Why Should You Exit Plan?

After pouring years into building their business, Tampa owners deserve an exit that reflects their hard work. Yet, as Snider notes in Walking to Destiny, three out of four owners “profoundly regretted” their sale within a year. That’s a staggering stat—and it’s why I’m passionate about exit planning. Working with me and their team, owners get a clear path to the exit they want, staying in control every step of the way.

How It Works

The Value Acceleration Methodology is the backbone of my process, guiding owners through three gates: Discover, Prepare, and Decide. Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Discover Gate: We kick off with the Triggering Event—an in-depth assessment of the business, personal, and financial landscape. Then, we build prioritized action plans tailored to the owner’s goals.
  • Prepare Gate: This is where the rubber meets the road. We tackle de-risking, execute 90-day sprints, and measure progress—recalibrating as needed. From there, we craft a Master Plan.
  • Decide Gate: The owner and team decide whether to keep growing or exit. Either way, they’re set up for success.

As a Tampa business broker, I bring my CEPA expertise and hands-on experience as a CBI, CMAP, and BCI to make this process seamless. My clients don’t just get a plan—they get a partner who’s been in the trenches and knows how to deliver results.
