What a interesting day. Today a customer from Europe came to my office. It was not a bizarre meeting until we got to discussing the E2 Immigration process, my role, the role of accountants and their visa attorney. This is where it got a bit odd.
I generally make a practice of not commenting on the fees of other professionals. I am not a CPA or an Attorney. I do however inquire as to what expectations false or accurate that have been set. In the initial hour of the meeting I found the wife of the customer looking at me with a troubled look. I stopped and asked her what was troubling her. She said she had something she wanted to ask me. Specifically, “for #immigration cases like hers, what was the normal fees i had seen from attorneys?” My response was that it varied by attorney, consultant, and or circumstance but that the fee generally ran per case from $5000 to $10,000 US. ” Her jaw dropped, seems she had already paid an attorney $30,000.
Fortunately, I think we can point the clients toward a proven performer saving them $25,000. The lesson here is do not pick you advisors (any of them brokers included) on the first interview. Interview them, assess their results, have them fairly explain their fees and what they are specifically……and compare. There are some sharks out there dont get bit on the E2Visa racket.
The single most important thing a buyer or seller can do is surround themselves with trustworthy professionals. As the scripture says “By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?” Do not choose your team by their nationality or becuase they are someone you would like to have dinner with…judge them by the results they produce consistantly.
