What Matters in selling a business. Lots of things…when discussing this with sellers we often hit the moment when they get overwhelmed with the complexity and the variables they need to consider. What I can say with great confidence is the following:
1. Transaction Experience or Time in the Desert: The more deals you do the more skilled you have under your belt the better equipped you are for deal with the ebbs and flow. As a seller and a buyer chances are you business sales is a one time event. Be Humble and recognize your probably not the expert in the sale process. If you engaged on price and commission rates you may pay the price for doing so by have a deal falter or never ever get consummated.
2. Size – You Need Firepower: Boutique is a cute word and makes you feel like your getting all the attention but I can assure you boutique doesn’t put money in the bank to spend on advertising. Business Brokerages are businesses….a healthy understanding of how they make money will help you understand the economic impact areas effecting a successful sale. Simply put…..if the broker makes only X and he needs X to put a roof over his head……there won’t be Y to spend on advertising. Haircut your broker and you haircut your service.
3. Market Dynamics & Battlefield Awareness: There is a market and it flows with supply and demand. Here in Orlando there are multiple variables including Immigration visas, development, and demographic that move the market fluidly. Your broker as a seller can control and drive the market if they have the size, skill and reputation. In the military battlefield awareness or awareness of the market is key to a successful sale.
