The Tortoise, the Hare, and the Truth About getting there
Fresh off a long five days at our Transworld Business Advisors conference and the IBBA conference for 2025 I am getting to play some catch up but I thought I would carve out some time to pen a reflection I felt I should share.
A couple of years ago I wrote a article on Linkedin about the lessons from Aesops Fables. I lament that many of younger folks ( I can’t believe I just said that) may not be familiar with the tales from the ancient greek philosopher but I know you have been exposed to them in TV and sitcoms. There is ample examples of cases where these stories are morphed into modern pop culture but I digress.
At the conference I got asked lots of questions from some younger folks in the firm. Not being in leadership and being around a bit that happens. There was one moment where a collegue asked me “Mike…how do you do it? How do you do so many deals year over year?” I put my head down and then looked up saying”its the same answer I have given you every time we meet.”
That got a bit of a chuckle from the group. But it is the truth….Slow and Steady does win the race. Blocking and Tackling and doing the fundamentals gets you to the finish line.
Friday I had the honor of getting put in our company Hall of Fame. We are not a big company of hundreds of thousands but when you add it up we are over 1000 and over the 45 years we have been in operation I would venture to guess well over 2000 folks have worked here. It is humbling and I am grateful but as I sit here reflecting on the questions I was asked by that colleague and the other junior brokers I looked at the record.
20 years, 1.5 Billion in Sales Volume, 450 deals….but never ever was I number 1 in the company. I am always in the top 5 to 10.
Consistency, Slow Steady, reliable…its not sexy but it pays the bills and guess what it is what all good companies are built on.
Customers Love Consistency, Banks Love Consistency, Your Spouse loves consistency as you can build and plan a life.
So Be a Tortoise…slow and steady does win the race.
