When I was a kid my T.V. time was limited to Mutual of Ohmaha’ Wild Kingdom, Peanuts Specials, and on the weekend classic movies. With only a couple of channels that worked (pre-cable) I got to watch westerns, war movies, Errol Flynn, and the like.
One of my favorite films was The Magnificent 7 …not the one with Denzel. No the old one with Steve McQueen, Yul Brenner, and Charles Bronson and a ton of other great actors.
There are tons of great scenes but my favorite is this one:
In this clip, Charles Bronson is prepping his gear to leave a village and these three boys from a poor village (who have befriended him) come to say goodbye. The boys lament his departure and say they are ashamed of their Father.
Bernardo (Bronsons Character) quickly turns and grabs the lads and spanks them. He scolds them saying “You think I am brave because I carry a gun. Your fathers are much braver because they carry responsibility! For you, your brothers, your sisters, and your mothers. And this responsibility is like a big rock that weighs a ton! It bends and twists them until it finally buries them underground! And there is nobody that says they have to do this. They do this because they love you and because they want to. I have never had this kind of courage. Running a farm, working like a mule with no guarantee whatever comes of it. This is bravery!”
In a world enamored by caped crusaders and legendary warriors, it’s easy to overlook the real heroes among us – the moms and dads who rise each day, armed with unwavering determination, to grind tirelessly and provide for their families. These unsung heroes, often clad in aprons and business suits rather than spandex, possess a different kind of courage – one that comes from the heart and is fueled by an unbreakable commitment to their loved ones.
In a society that values instant gratification, parents exhibit true courage by patiently working day in and day out to create a stable environment for their children. They persevere through challenges, whether it’s navigating a demanding job, managing a tight budget, or balancing household chores. Their ability to confront adversity head-on while maintaining a sense of normalcy for their families is nothing short of heroic.
Parents serve as the ultimate role models for their children, teaching them vital life lessons that extend beyond the classroom. By demonstrating the importance of hard work, perseverance, and dedication, moms and dads instill in their offspring the values that will shape their character and guide them throughout life.
Children witness the sacrifices their parents make, the late nights spent working, and the persistent efforts to ensure their well-being. These everyday acts of courage leave an indelible impression, showing youngsters the true meaning of strength and determination.
True heroism lies not only in grand gestures but also in the ability to give selflessly and unconditionally. Parents pour their hearts into every action, prioritizing their children’s needs above their own desires. This selflessness fosters a profound sense of love and security that forms the foundation of a strong family unit.
Their ability to navigate the challenges of life with grace, provide for their loved ones, and create a nurturing environment speaks volumes about their character. As we celebrate their resilience and selflessness, let us remember that these unsung heroes are the real pillars of society, inspiring us all to embrace the values of hard work, dedication, and unconditional love.
